Fees & Insurance

The stigma for therapy is finally diminishing, and people are finding value in therapy for treatment and preventative care. Many people still delay therapy because of their concern about the cost. Let me offer you some more information that might make the investment less ambiguous.

Rate

Fees for therapy sessions align with other empirically-trained Psy.D./Ph.D level practitioners in the St. Louis area (my current home base). My current rate for therapy is $165 per session. My session length is 50-55 minutes in duration.

Insurance

I am “Out Of Network” with all insurance companies. If you wish to use insurance, your insurance may still cover some or part of the cost of therapy through Out Of Network Benefits.

Why have I chosen to be Out of Network? Anecdotally, this appears to be a growing trend in the mental health field as insurance companies can be restrictive. I am not required to provide a diagnosis to the insurance company (greater privacy), not limited in session length or frequency (insurance encourages shorter sessions for many clients), and give my attention to client care rather than filing lots of insurance paperwork that sometimes makes it difficult for therapists to be paid.

If you are on the fence about using your insurance, I would encourage you to look at your insurance benefits for Mental Health coverage. Some require a high deductible that costs the equivalent of private pay, which may widen your options in selecting a therapist that feels like a good fit for you - even if we don’t work together, I want to empower you to find the right therapist for your needs.

Out Of Network Benefits?

If your insurance plan provides out-of-network benefits, I can provide you with documentation that you can then submit to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement.

Many insurance plans offer out of network mental health care benefits, and will reimburse you for a percentage of the cost of our sessions. Here are some questions that you may ask your insurance company:

  • Do I have out-of-network benefits for mental health coverage?

  • If so, what percentage is covered?

  • Is there a session limit, and if so, in what time period?

  • Do I have a deductible? What is it and how much of it have I met?

  • How do I submit a request for reimbursement?

Please know that if we do use your insurance for reimbursement, I will need to use a diagnosis code. Some people prefer not to use insurance so that a diagnosis code will not be shared with their insurance company.

Payment

Payment is due at the end of the session. Accepted forms of payment for in-person sessions include cash, check, credit or debit cards. Virtual sessions will require a credit/debit or HSA card.

Funds from a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) are generally permitted to be used for psychological consultation, evaluation, and treatment. Please inquire about the details of your HSA or FSA plan to verify covered services.

Initial Consultation

I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation, during which we will discuss what is bringing you to therapy, what therapy would look like, questions you may have about my practice, and ultimately determine if we are a good fit.

Session Format

I typically meet weekly with new clients and taper frequency as progress occurs. Duration of treatment varies depending upon your specific needs and goals. My current average is 12-14 sessions until successful “graduation” from therapy, but I have many clients who meet their initial goals and choose to continue with therapy as they have found it valuable.

The first session, also known as an intake session, will be focused on gathering information about your symptoms and relevant background. Information gathering will trickle into the next few sessions while I get a better understanding of the moving parts of your life. By the end of the first or second meeting, we will collaboratively develop a roadmap for therapy based on your goals and treatment preferences. We will revisit and modify the treatment plan as goals are met over time.
